The Reserva Marina de Galápagos (RMG) or Galapagos Marine Reserve (GMR) was formally created in 1998 under special Galapagos law to manage the sustainable use and the conservation of its resources. The reserve extends 40 nautical miles out to sea from the islands’ baseline and has an area of approximately 138,000 km2 - making it one of the largest marine protected areas in the world.
